BHAGAVAD-GITA AS IT IS
(Second Edition)
English Translation By : His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
1. Monotheism ?
Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods (a partly devine being, the offspring of God or Goddess and a mortal) and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures. (Chapter 7, Text 20)
PURPORT
Less intelligent people who have lost their spiritual sense take shelter of demigods for immediate fulfillment of material desires, Generally, such people do not go the Supreme Personality of Godhead, because they are in the lower modes of nature (ignorance and passion) and therefore worship various demigods. Following the rules and regulations of worship, they are satisfied.
I am never manifest to the foolish and unintelligent. For them I am covered by My internal potency, and therefore do not know that I am unborn and infallible. (Chapter 7, Text 25)
PURPORT
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krsna, is not only unborn but also avyaya, inexhaustible. His eternal form is bliss and knowledge, and His energies are all inexhaustible.
2. Caste ? Women are lower birth ?
O son of Prtha, those who take shelter in Me, though they be of lower birth - women, vaisyas [merchants] and sudras [workers] - can attain the supreme destination. (Chapter 9, Text 32)
PURPORT
In the material conception of life there are lower and higher classes of people. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam (2.4.18) it is stated that even the lowest, who are called candalas (chandalas - dog eaters), can be purified by association with a pure devotee.
According to the different material nature, men are classified in the mode of goodness (brahmanas), the mode of passion (ksatriyas), the mixed modes of passion and ignorance (vaisyas, or merchants), and the mode of ignorance (sudras, or workers). Those lower than them are called candalas, and they are born in sinful families. Generally, the association of those born in sinful families is not accepted by the higher classes.
3. Heaven and Hell ?
O Krsna, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that those who destroy family traditions dwell always in hell. (Chapter 1, Text 43)
O son of Kunti, either you will be killed on the battlefield and attain the heavenly planets, or you will conquer an enjoy the earthly kingdom. Therefore, get up with determination and fight. (Chapter 2, Text 37)
Those who study the Vedas and drink the soma juice, seeking the heavenly planets, worship Me indirectly. Purified of sinful reactions, they take birth on the pious, heavenly planet of Indra, where they enjoy goldly delights. (Chapter 9, Text 20)
Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell. (Chapter 16, Text 16)
PURPORT For Chapter 2, Text 31
"In the battelfield, a king or ksatriya, while fighting another king envious of him, is eligible for achieving heavenly planets after death, as the brahmanas also attain the heavenly planets by sacrificing animal in the sacrificial fire"
4. Contradicting with Science ?
What science tell us that 140,000 years ago, there is no possibilities for human being. Theory of evolution tells us even 100,000 years ago only Chromagnon (Ape) were there on the Earth.
PURPORT For Chapter 8, Text 17
The duration of the material universe is limited. It is manifested in cycles of kalpas. A kalpa is a day of Brahma, and one day of Brahma consists of a thousand cycles of four yugas, or ages: Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali. The cycle of Satya is characterized by virtue, wisdom and religion, there being practically no ignorance and vice, and the yuga lasts 1,728,000 years. In the Treta-yuga vice is introduced, and this yuga last 1,296,000 years. In the Dvapara-yuga there is an even greater decline in virtue and religion, vice increasing, and this yuga lasts 864,000 years. And finally in Kali-yuga(the yuga we have now been experiencing over the past 5,000 years) there is an abundance of strife, ignorance, irreligion and vice, true virtue being practically nonexistent, and this yuga lasts 432,000 years.
